ABOUT

What We Do:

The tag line for Hero Fabrications is Sewing for the Film Industry. What that really comes down to is problem solving. Primarily on a film set. Mostly with soft goods. A prop has the potential to be used in different ways, and can’t be too fussy on set. Grip equipment is going to be handled by a lot of people, so it needs to be durable and easy to use. A costume has to look a certain way, and make an actor feel comfortable and confident. We use these concepts as a framework, and add in the specific requirements of each job.

From the interesting…

A hidden pocket in a teddy bear to hide a precious flash drive. A sports-bra length bullet-proof vest for a pregnant actor to do close-ups. Seat covers for the interior of an exterior picture bus, to match the interior picture bus.

…To the more straightforward:

Slipcovers for directors chair backs to be screen printed for new jobs. Kidnap hoods, gags, and blindfolds, made for actor comfort. Patches and repairs to flags and floppies.

Whatever the challenges and parameters, we combine creativity with practicality to create finished products that work.

Who We Are:

Lisa Marzolf Craig got her trial by fire in the independent film world of the late 90s. It’s where she learned that a schedule is just a nice idea, anything can change at any time, and sleep is a luxury.

Lisa started sewing in the 6th grade and never stopped. While life on set in wardrobe was interesting (and a super fun way to spend her 20s,) eventually the desire to “make stuff” full-time won out. Luckily, all of those amazing people she met on set kept her number. Soon she was making soft boxes for grips and bullet proof vests for props, and a whole new world of fabrication possibilities opened up.

Years later, she is constantly learning new things about her craft, and appreciates that every day brings a new web search that may or may not put her on some kind of watch list.

Dan Milledge is Lisa’s right hand (attached to a much taller body.) His range of more traditional work experience in animation, directing audio books, and pitching advertising ideas almost never comes in handy at Hero Fabrications.

Luckily, Dan has some less traditional work and life experience that we draw upon daily. His season as a stand-in (and one glorious moment of hand doubling) on Dawson’s Creek primed him for being our fit model for bullet proof vests, or any other man-sized prop or costume. His years as a parent organizer for the soccer team left him with the gift of patience for dealing with Lisa’s demands requests. For many years, Dan created masterpiece Halloween costumes for his kids that put any professional costume designer to shame. Someday we hope to put his extensive knowledge of hot glue to good use.
